On November 1st, Prof. Bernd Schnabl, University of California, San Diego, USA, was invited to give an academic report entitled "Host-Microbiome Interactions in Chronic Liver Diseases" at Room 102, Medical Building, Jiangning Campus. The report was hosted by Professor LiruiWang, fromschool of Basic Medical and Clinical Pharmacology.

In the report, Professor Bernd Schnabl shared with members of faculty and students the results of the study onthe effects of gut microbiota on alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic liver disease. The study revealed the role of intestinal mucosal metastasis in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease. In addition, Professor Schnabl also systematically outlined the effects of long-term alcohol consumption on human intestinal microflora. The participating faculty members and students enthusiastically interacted with Professor Bernd Schnabl on academic issues of their own interest as well. Professor Bernd Schnabl responded to all questions calmly and the scene was warm and the atmosphere sufficiently invigorating. The academic conference and the proceedings were also witnessed by students and faculty from Nanjing Medical University and other fraternal institutions.

Bernd Schnabl has for a long time been engaged in the study of intestinal microbiota, including intestinal bacteria, fungi, viruses and bacteriophages, and liver disease research. His research revealed the role of gut mucosal bacterial metastasis in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease and elucidated the mechanism of destruction of the intestinal mucosal barrier during the development of chronic liver disease. He is well published in a number of re-known journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Cell Host Microbe, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, J Hepatol and PNAS.
